Painting in the American Legation
Tangier is a wonderful ‘edge city’ at the border between north and south where Europe meets Africa looking not only to the Mediterranean but also the furious Atlantic, we have two seas my taxi driver said when talking of fishing. Language becomes blurred as Arabic and French overlap English and Spanish such is the international cultural crossroads built up since the fifth century. Attracting extraordinary depth of writers experimenting with their art and a lot more openly in a Muslim country is a credit to the sophistication of the indigenous people where the numbers now approach two million. The English churchyard a fascinating resting place for so many familiar names often aristocrats running away from the norm.
No better place to stay and experiment too and where better than in the houses above where our abode Dar Sinclair brings comfort authenticity and a peacefulness away from the bustle of the medina and side streets. Where we painted and revised the long suffering activities of drawing with a pencil and no rubber, kitchen bridge and backgammon.
The gardens at Dar Sinclair are a delight tended over many many years by Yassif who’s charming french chatter through a warm smile makes the understanding of the place just delicious.
